Do I need a cellphone or smartphone?
Yes. In order to participate in this study, participants need to own some type of phone (smartphone or cell phone) that allows them to send and receive text messages.

Do I have to have to have a phone?
Yes. A mobile phone is necessary to be a part of the study.

Can I participate if I'm in another study?
Depending on the type of study, you may or may not be able to participate. We will need to talk to the other study coordinator to make sure that your involvement will not pose problems for you or the other study.

Are there any costs involved in participating?
No there is no cost to participate.

Do I have to come to Stanford?
Yes, you will need to come to our Stanford office on Arastradero Road four times over 18 months for assessments.

Can someone else in my household participate?
We are only able to enroll one member per household.

Will I get paid?
We do not pay people to participate in our studies. Participants will receive a gift card for a small amount for completing each of the study assessments.

How long will I be a participant?
You will be in the study for 18 months.

Can I choose which program I am assigned in?
No. Participants will be randomly assigned to the programs.

What if I go on vacation?
We can usually work around your schedule if you will be away for short periods of time (1-2 weeks). If you have to be away for an extended period, please let someone on the staff know and we will see what we can do to accommodate it.

Is this study a part of the Stanford Hospital?
No. Our research is not affiliated with Stanford Hospital and clinics or Stanford Health Care. We are a research team in the Stanford Prevention Research Center, which is a division of the Stanford School of Medicine. We do not provide health care services.

Can I get a prescription?
No. We do not offer medication or prescriptions. This study is not a substitute for seeing your primary care provider.

Is this a group exercise program or class?
No. This study does not offer group programs or exercise classes. We encourage you to find a form of physical activity that works best for you.

Can I change my program if I don’t like it?
The goal of the research is to test how the programs work to shape people’s habits over time. Please make the decision carefully to enroll, as you will not be able to choose the program or change it if you don’t like it. You do have the right to withdraw from the research at any time.
